Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) Recipe

A beautifully light and spicy Janapenese pescatarean dish using Chilli No. 5 Chinese Hot & Sour Sauce.
Popular street food from Osaka, Japan - Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) is a savoury version of Japanese pancake, made with flour, eggs, shredded cabbage, and your choice of protein, and topped with a variety of condiments.
This incredibly delicious and entertaining recipe is a Japanese favourite and features a golden and crispy savoury pancake topped by Instagram- fantastic dancing bonito flakes.

  • Sesame Seeds
  • 2 Carrots
  • 1/2 Cabbage
  • Aonori Flakes
  • Ginger
  • Katsoubushi
  • Hondashi Sauce / Soy Sauce
  • All- purpose flour (plain flour)


  • Start by toasting the Sesame Seeds in a pan
  • While keeping an eye on Sesame Seeds toasting, start chopping : the cabbage, red onion, carrots, flakes of noori, ginger
  • Prepare the Noori Flakes, Ginger and Katsoubushi
  • Take off the Sesame Seeds from the pan
  • Add all ingredients on a bowl and season it with salt
  • Crack an egg and add to the previous mixture
  • Season the mixture with Hondashi (or Soy Sauce)
  • Add 2 tbsp of flour and mix out everything
  • Add a second egg and while mixing see the water being drawn- out from the vegetables
  • Add pickled ginger
  • And now you're ready to fry!
  • Add oil to the pan
  • Add the mixture to the pan and press it down into a beautiful formed pancake
  • Flip the pancake
  • At this point, while this finishes cooking you can start preparing the toppings
  • Add a quarter of a cup of Chinese Hot & Sour and a few dashes of Okonomi Sauce
  • With a brush add the sauce on top of the pancake
  • Take out the pan from the heat and lay it straight on a cutting board
  • Finish it by adding all toppings: mayonnaise, green onion, Aonori flakes, sesame seeds and katsobuchi



Why is Okon om iyaki so healthy? Cabbage is a big part of this dinner-party classic. Cabbage contains an abundance of good proteins, calcium and vitamins and 70 percent of the daily requirement of vitamin C is contained in one large leaf of cabbage. 
Cabbage has high levels of beta-carotene, lutein, and other heart-protective antioxidants. It also helps lower something called “oxidized” LDL, which is linked to hardening of the arteries. And since it eases inflammation, it can help prevent heart disease.
