What are the Health benefits of Celery?

Celery is one of those vegetables that you either love or hate. But once the haters realise its health benefits, even they might come to appreciate this marshland plant which comes from the same umbellifer family as the carrot and parsley.

Celery is predominantly made up of water, with 95% of its content being H2O. However, despite its high water content, celery also contains some important vitamins and minerals including vitamins A, B and K, calcium, potassium and folate.

Native to the Mediterranean and the Middle East, celery has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries, primarily to treat illnesses such as gout and arthritis, and to ease pain.

Why is Celery good for you?

Amongst the main celery health benefits is the thought that it can help fight cancer due to its rich antioxidant content. Celery contains apigenin and luteolin, both of which promote cancer cell death. Celery can also reduce inflammation associated with chronic disease as well as reduce your risk of heart disease.

Another celery benefit is that the vegetable is thought to have a protective effect against substances that can damage sperm count. And due to its insoluble fibre, celery can also prevent and treat constipation and other gut problems.
